Maine Bed and Breakfasts

Maine is known as the Pine Tree State and is a beautiful picturesque state in the New England region of the United States. Maine is the most northern state in New England and of the eastern United States. Maine is well known for it’s scenery with low rolling mountains, a mostly rocky coastline and a heavily forested interior of the state. Maine is also well known for it’s exceptional seafood cuisine, particularly lobsters and clams.

If you are traveling to Maine for a vacation, one of the best choices for your stay is at a Maine bed and breakfast. Maine bed and breakfast inns are very popular with tourists because they offer a different angle to accommodations in the area. Usually, Maine bed and breakfast accommodations are more off the beaten path while maintaining proximity to the local attractions. In some cases, a Maine bed and breakfast is closer to more of the outdoor activities that Maine has to offer.

Maine is bordered to the south and east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north is the Canadian province of New Brunswick. The Canadian Province of Quebec is located to the northeast of Maine. Maine is the only state in the country that only borders one other state—New Hampshire which is located to the west of Maine.

Maine bed and breakfast inns are plentiful throughout the state and are located in every region. There are Maine bed and breakfast accommodations that are available in the forested area of the state, close to the ocean and throughout the vast range of areas in the state. Over 90 per cent of Maine is forested lands, which lends it to be the least populous state east of the Mississippi River, but nevertheless, there are still a wide variety of Maine bed and breakfast accommodations available.

The State of Maine is also well known for the dramatic ocean scenery. There are a variety of sandy beaches, lighthouses, offshore islands and quiet fishing villages along the coastline. These areas are prime examples of great Maine bed and breakfast locations that are available. You can have everything you need—access to tourist spots, great scenery in a home-like atmosphere.

A Maine bed and breakfast inn, also referred to as a B&B is a boarding house of sorts that is typically operated out of a large, single family residence, most often in a smaller town or village or in a community in the larger urban centers.

If you are planning to stay at a Maine B&B, you can expect to stay in a private bedroom in a home. Some Maine B&Bs have private bathrooms en-suite to each of the bedrooms, while others have a publicly shared bathroom for all the guests to use. In the morning, breakfast is served to the guests, usually in the house’s dining room or kitchen area. In some instances though, a Maine bed and breakfast inn will serve breakfast right to your private bedroom.

Maine bed and breakfast inns are operated either as a primary occupation or as secondary income for the house’s owners. The staff at a Maine B&B is often the owners and the family members that reside in the home.

There are a few things you can expect when you are staying at a Maine bed and breakfast—you are usually expected to pay for your stay when you get to the Maine B&B and leave before noon on the day of your departure. If you are planning to stay more than one night, you should know that you will likely be expected to be out of the home for the majority of the daytime. However, during the day is when you will most likely be out seeing the sights in Maine.

One of the greatest advantages of staying at a Maine bed and breakfast is the local knowledge of your hosts. For the simple reason that they reside in the area, they have a lot of knowledge about the local scene and can point you in the direction of a lot of the tourist attractions and things to do. Also, they will be able to tell you about things to do and places to see that aren’t heavily advertised. This local knowledge could mean that you will have an even better vacation with more to see and do than just what you read in a brochure.

One thing to keep in mind when you are planning your trip is that you should book your Maine bed and breakfast accommodations well in advance. Most Maine B&Bs can only accommodate between 2 and twelve guests at any time, so making your reservations well in advance is a good idea.

A Maine bed and breakfast host will help make your stay in Maine a wonderful one. Your vacation time in Maine will be so much different if you stay in a Maine B&B instead of a big, urban commerical hotel. Most Maine bed and breakfast inns are off the beaten path and not near a major city center, so while this may be inconvenient if you are trying to navigate through the urban centers, it certainly is more worthy if you are looking to do things outside of those areas.
